The pubic symphysis is a cartilaginous joint type located between both symphyseal surfaces of pubic bones.

Between both surfaces is an interpubic fibrocartilage disc with a cavity in the middle filled with the synovial fluid.

Together with the sacroiliac joints, the pubic symphysis forms closed and stable pelvic bone ring.

Several ligaments strengthen the connection:

Superior pubic ligament - stretched between the pubic tubercles of both pubic bones above the symphysis;
Inferior pubic ligament (also known as the arcuate pubic ligament) - extends below the symphysis between inferior rami of both pubic bones; it is the strongest of the ligaments and gives the most stability to the joint.

Usually, there are no movements in the symphysis as the joint keeps both bones together and steady, except during the pregnancy.

The joint provides little mobility during labor when the pelvic diameters increase in size.
